Reading and Writing
The teaching of reading in First Grade is a multifaceted approach. An appreciation of reading and good literature is nurtured, which provides a foundation for students to become life-long readers. Through the use of quality literature, poetry, and guided and independent reading, the students are actively involved in a complete literacy program. Our big author studies include: Kevin Henkes, Eric Carle, Frank Asch, and Tomie dePaola.
Phonics strategies and the most frequently used words (Dolch Words) are used to strengthen their reading skills and to facilitate the transition from developmental to conventional spelling in the students’ writing. The students write daily to reinforce skills across the curriculum. Some of the ways their writing is practiced can be found in weekly spelling papers, personal reflections in their journals, word problems in math and special social studies or science writing projects.
Math
Students must understand numbers if they are to make sense of the way numbers are used in their everyday world. In class, the students are actively involved with many ands-on activities in centers, mental math thinking activities and pencil and paper practice to help them gain a better understanding of math. Through the Common Core Standards, students will study patterns, numeration, counting, money, time, measurement, operations, and geometry. There will be weekly math homework given as a follow up to the previous weeks lessons. It will be distributed on Mondays and will be due on Thursdays.
Social Studies
The social studies units in First Grade focus on families. During the year, student study rules and responsibilities relating to their lives important events, the community, and people.
Science
Children will learn through Next Generation Science Standards by hands-on involvement. This philosophy is incorporated into our science program. Our science curriculum consists of many units of study designed to develop critical thinking. These units include: living and nonliving things, habitats, seasons, earth, sun, moon, shadows and light and sound.
